csuperb actually had an active bystander training this year at the symposium and the programmers had planned an amazing workshop that included actual scenarios on these biases but only one other student besides myself showed up and one faculty. As a Filipino student, I have never seen another Filipino faculty member in STEM, even while looking at numerous departments when I was searching for REU programs. My lived experience tells me that Filipinos and other southeast asians are severely underrepresented in STEM, however since other asian groups are overrepresented, our experience and our presence is erased.

In terms of faculty, specifically professors, amplifying Black contributions to science (while exposing the racism embedded in the field) is especially important in fields like medicine. Not only through describing intentional contributions, but coerced and forced contributions, like through Henrietta Lacks, and through J. Marion Sims, the Father of Modern Gynecology whose knowledge came from brutal experimentation on Black slave women.

It means the intentional and brutal de-indoctrination of your mind to uncover the ways your field, and yourself, has caused harm and trauma to Black people and marginalized communities while navigating the field (and the broader world).It also means to call out the inherent nature of the STEM field being "above racism" and aware of the "bigger picture", as it participates in eugenics and erasure of the lived experiences of Black people as we've served as tools to move so many of these fields forward.
